According to an article in todays Sunday press, not only is your average TV finding it hard to find a dress that fits perfectly, but so is your average British woman.

The average supermodel is nearly 6' tall, weighs 120lb and is a size 10. The average British woman is a little over 5' 4", weighs 150lb and wears a size 14. There are no set standards in the sizing industry too, a dress size 12 in Next might be a 10 in Marks & Spencer, and something quite different in Gap.
The shape of the average UK woman has been changing as well. In 1920 she was 32- 20-32, in 1960 34-24-33 and today 36-28-38. Futhermore looking towards Europe we find that a dress size 12 is a 38" in Germany, Netherlands and France, a 40" in Belgium, a 44" in Italy and a 46" in Portugal and Spain. No wonder then that 30% of all customer transactions are accounted for by returned goods.
Seems to me then that we are all better off shopping in the Charity shops, where there are bargains galore - just wish I had the nerve to buy something in one. Bit like being a kiddie in a sweet-shop.
Hope the statistics were interesting.

Transsexual wins landmark ruling

The case was at the European Court of Human Rights
A British transsexual has won her battle in the European Court of Human Rights to be recognised as a woman and be allowed to marry. Christine Goodwin, 64, had argued that English law denied her the right to a new sexual identity.
The judgment delivered in the Strasbourg court unanimously held that the UK's failure to recognise her new identity in law breached her rights to respect for privacy and her right to marry under the European Convention on Human Rights.

Harassment
The UK is one of four countries in the Council of Europe which does not recognise a sex change as legally valid. The others are Ireland, Andorra and Albania.
Ms Goodwin also argued that her human rights had been denied because she was unable to draw a pension until she is 65.
English law allows women to qualify for a pension when they turn 60.
The former bus driver, who had a full sex change operation in 1990, told the court she was not given a new National Insurance number after the operation.
She says she suffered sexual harassment at work after her employers discovered she had formerly been a man.
She was awarded £14,685 for costs and expenses.

This following thoughts from Press for Change highlight the obstacles yet to be overcome.

PRESS RELEASE
A Legal Landmark, But It's Not The End.
Transsexual campaigners give cautious welcome to
European court ruling

Campaigners for the rights of transsexual people today welcomed a landmark ruling from the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), overturning the United Kingdom's thirty-year failure to grant legal recognition of change of sex. In the fifth such case brought before the court by British trans people, judges upheld the applications of Christine Goodwin and a second applicant known only as "I". The decision holds that British law breaches the human rights of transsexual people and it must be amended to allow legal recognition of their new sex.
However, campaigners also stressed the need for changes to UK law to implement the ruling, and expressed concerns at the speed and nature of such changes.
Press For Change Vice-President Dr Stephen Whittle, said today:
"This is a historic victory. It is the beginning of the end of a thirty-year legal nightmare for the UK's 5,000 trans people.
"However, the nightmare will continue until Parliament changes the law. We won't celebrate until that job is done."
Press For Change wants a change in statute law to ensure that trans people in the UK can have their birth certificates
amended to reflect a change of sex, and that the change is valid for all legal purposes.

Stephen Whittle continued:
"A change in statute law is essential.
Without it, the courts may not regard an amended birth certificate as final, leaving our sex open to further challenge. This has already happened in the USA, where some transsexual people have found that amended birth certificates were not recognised in court.
"British courts got us into this mess thirty years ago, and they have repeatedly refused to undo the damage.
We now rely on Parliament to clarify the situation once and for all, and save us from being dragged through the courts all over again."
Press For Change has drawn up detailed proposals for legislation, which would draw on the best aspects of legislation from other countries.
"It is now time for the government to make a clear commitment to legislate for change. We are ready to work with government to sort out the details, and to help them finish the job."
Previous litigant Mark Rees said:
" When I lost my case in 1986 I knew there were others waiting in the wings ... if I should fail, they would carry on the fight,
and so they have."
Thanks to PFC and the courageous stand taken by many individuals, this fight is being and will be won.

My Fantantasy Day - By Michelle of Chevy

I roll over and lazily open one eye, the sun is streaming through the bedroom window. There is an empty space next to me where Sally my wife should have been but yesterday she took the girls and went to Lincoln to visit her mother for 3 days. There is a tight knot of apprehension in the base of my stomach as I remember the telephone conversation yesterday.

Michelle the charming lady on the end of the phone did all she could to put me at ease but my heart was pounding in my chest as I asked directions to her make over studio in Bournemouth

I crawled out of bed and into the shower. Fully awake now my thoughts keep wandering to what lies in store for me today. Back in the bedroom I looked longingly at the battered brown suitcase I had dragged in yesterday from the potting shed where Sally would never dare go, she hates spiders and it suits me to keep the intricate webs on show, that way she will never discover the dark secrets my shed contains. I start to dress ....But wait a moment with Sally out of the way there is nothing to stop me opening the suitcase. Inside I let the soft satiny pale pink material of my negligee fall through my hands I have never worn it in the house before just paraded in front of the spiders in the potting shed.

I pull out a pair of shiny black panties and lovingly slip them on followed by black silky stockings and a black and red suspender belt with a pretty little rose sewn on the front

Now a bra to match and I am ready to get Alan's clothes on top. Driving to Bournemouth today will be a pleasure not previously experienced.

Following Michelle's directions were easy and I soon arrived at Aldi where I was to park but now my heart was pounding again and I have almost lost my nerve, I hang around for a while before daring to open the door of the bright yellow salon I can see some ladies having their hair done I hope I am not going to have to be on show out here………

A very nice lady comes to greet me is this Michelle? No I am Jill she says, would you like to come with me and she leads me out to the back of the salon through a corridor with an overflowing rail of beautifully coloured clothes in wonderful materials through a small room full of wigs and make up on to a cosy room with a sofa and beauty couch, here she settled me down with a steaming mug of coffee to wait for Michelle. It was not long before Michelle arrived and she put me at ease immediately, she is very friendly and obviously loves her job, 'What kind of look are you after Alan she said' but wait a moment what is your femme name? It won't seem right calling you Alan when you are dressed.

She had me stumped there I had not given it a thought, Well it is better if you keep to the same initial Michelle said as when you go out if you have to use a credit card no one will suspect you.

Go out? Is she crazy I have never been out I would never pass! Only the spiders in the shed have seen me 'dressed' what is she thinking of!

After a lot of deliberation I settled for Alice, Michelle rather liked Alana and Jill suggested Angela but as Sally's sister is called Angela and Alana seems just too near to Alan I am quite pleased with Alice.

A short while later after I had finished my coffee I told Michelle that I had dreamt of looking like Joanna Lumley tall blonde and beautiful, well I am tall! Get your underwear on and then put on a gown Michelle ordered and I will be waiting for you in the make up room. Well that was easy I have already got my sexy black undies on, as I removed Alan's suit I realised that I was starting to enjoy myself. Within minutes I was ready for Michelle to give Alice her very first make up lesson, there was so much to remember and I was sure that I would never be able to apply all the magic potions as expertly as Michelle did. But don't worry I will write everything down for you to take home with you she said. I couldn't believe my eyes as I Alan started to disappear and Alice emerged. 'Right now for some hair ' As if by magic, Michelle pulled down a long silver box from the shelf above me and out tumbled long golden blonde curls. As I felt the soft silky hair about my shoulders I almost burst with happiness I had never tried a wig before and Michelle just seemed to know what suited me.

My nails were painted a soft pearly pink and then I was allowed to choose some outfits to wear for The photos

My first choice was a matching dress and jacket in a wonderful shade of purple and Michelle even found me a matching handbag to complete the ensemble

I was enjoying myself so much I

could not imagine being boring old Alan again. There was a long black evening dress which needed lots of gold chains and big earrings . A dark fur coat a sexy leopard skin cat suit and even a French maid's outfit…just for fun. Michelle said I was a natural although I was just copying some of the
super poses I had seen in my secret hoard of glossy women's magazines.

All too soon the photo shoot was finished and another delightful lady called Claire arrived to look after me while Michelle went off to develop the film. Time to try on more outfits that I had not managed so far. Would you like to go into the main salon asked Claire? I didn't dare…come on you look fine she said, so a few minutes later I was sitting in the window with a coffee and a magazine No one took any notice.

Come for a walk down the road Claire called, feeling quite bold now I cautiously stepped outside the salon it was wonderful the wind blew around my ankles and with every step I grew more confident. I was waiting for someone to call out but no one did I caught sight of myself in a shop window I just cant believe that the tall elegant blonde staring back could possible be me.

All good things have to end and in no time we were back in the salon and Michelle had arrived with the photos. There was another agonising wait while they were sorted and put into an album

My heart was starting to beat loudly again as I took the dark red book full of Alice, I started to turn the pages who was this beautiful blonde looking out at me?

Michelle had done an amazing job to transform the dull Alan into the stunning sophisticated model, which she had captured on film forever.

Four hours had passed so quickly and now it was time to put Alice away and revert to my mundane life back home.

This has been the best day of my life at last I know what it is really like to be a woman to be pampered and made up and I have the photos to remind me of a truly memorable day when I am at home pottering in my shed.
